When did the obsession start?
IT ALL STARTED WHEN…
We rented a ’74 Westfalia pop top from Surfari Vintage Wagons. (I would highly highly recommend them). We set off on the dream trip up the coast of Highway 1. But we made one major mistake. We mapped it out as if we were riding in a normal car. BIG MISTAKE.
These vessels do not get over 40 mi per hour. Which is something we grew to love. They really do slow you down, literally they slow you down. The downside: we pulled up to each campsite in the dark of night. Another downside: There were some hills we didn’t think we would make it up. Really living on a prayer. But there are SOOOOO many upsides. Our favorite upside. The amount of friends you make along the way. Needless to say my soul became latched to this tin box on wheels.
Some speculate we are predisposition to be drawn to van life since we are third culture kids. Some may say it’s from watching Endless Summer, it might be that our parents always had VW’s. The speculation could go on and on.
Long story short we became determined that one day we would also have one of these friendship machines. It’s hard to explain the magic of the bus. People’s faces light up when they see you rolling. I don’t know if it’s because it’s iconic, it’s a cult, it’s a culture, it’s a community. The best part is, the bus smiles back. I mean look at the design of the front end.
OUR FAVORITE FEATURES
It has a pop top. Therefore, it sleeps four people on cushy mattress. That means you get an amazing sleep and are ready to adventure the next day.
The fold out table. It really means you can puzzle on the go.
The large steering wheel & lack of power steering. Its a work out just to park it.
